The Sparks Fly Upward takes place in Berlin, Germany from October 1938 through the Siege of Berlin in May 1945. Most of the story unfolds in the neighborhood in and around the Oranienburgerstrasse Synagogue in Berlin. During this time life for German Jews was increasingly impacted, and ultimately devastated by the Nazi regime.
